After the movie we of course know reavers were the result of exposure to a chemical, so why would exposure to a reaver turn a normal human into one?Īre their bites infectious ? (Like a zombie) Mal mentions a very “urban legend-ish” explanation about them having reached the edge of space and gone mad from the nothingness ( or something to that effect). In that episode, neither the characters nor us (the audience) know what caused the creation of Reavers. He then starts to gradually transition to a reaver himself. Was there ever any clear explanation of the case of the reaver encountered in “bushwacked?”Īs presented, a single man survived a reaver attack that killed everyone else on the ship. I can’t imagine that life as a reaver would be conducive to reproduction, but if it were to happen, reavers were chemically created which doesn’t necessarily mean genetic alteration, and any progeny might be equally likely to be reaver, normal human, or predisposed to reaver-dom It’s because of that chaotic nature that they don’t eat regular food and instead prefer to cannibalize their victims. Their heightened aggression gets channeled into lots of things to sow that chaos-including killing, but also clearly torturing, mutilating, raping, and trapping. Reavers are more of chaos personified than pure monstrous, killing machines. But being that they’re mostly made up of the original Miranda population, it stands to reason that would also include females. There’s not “evidence” of female reavers, but that’s mostly because reavers aren’t actually shown for most of the series/film screentime. I don’t think Reavers would subscribe to any kind of hierarchy as that would quickly devolve into their own annihilation, but they’re still people and clearly capable of cooperating, albeit in a more chaotic manner. Calling them a “society” is incredibly generous as they function more like wild animals, but even wild animals have forms of social structure. Serenity actually makes it clear that they’re not brainless zombies, but rather hyper-aggressive people.
